After a really solid start to the season, the Wildcats faced Claygate in the County Cup, a competition that brings together some strong opposition, including our own Lionesses and teams such as London City.
It was our second successive year facing Claygate, following a closely contested 3–1 defeat last season. This time, injuries and the absence of our regular goalkeeper added to the challenge.
The girls worked hard throughout the first half and, despite going into the break 2–0 down, we still felt very much in the game. Unfortunately, a couple of difficult moments after the restart saw Claygate extend their lead to three and then four.
From there, it became a tough afternoon. As a coach, it is easy to ask everyone to keep going, but finding that belief when the game is slipping away is much harder. The girls deserve credit for their efforts in challenging circumstances.
Claygate took their chances very well and deservedly progressed to the next round. From our perspective, though, the final score did not reflect the ability within this Wildcats team or the gap between the two sides.
And, with a little friendly club rivalry in mind, we suspect our Lionesses might have something to say should their paths cross later in the competition! ?
Well done to all the girls for their efforts, and congratulations to Claygate. Hopefully, next season brings another meeting and a chance for us to turn the result around.
