Its was mothering Sunday, but we were all in for a treat. Windlesham Warriors welcomed Mayford Hawks to the Field of Remembrance on Sunday, and both teams provided us with a great game of football.
The starting line up for the Warriors was Alfie Moult in goal, Tom Chapman in defence, Tessa Goringe and Edward Stephens in midfield, Caldryn Buckley as striker. It was a tight start to the game, both teams seemed evenly matched and everyone was playing their part in the match. Great defending from Tom Chapman, kept Mayfords efforts on goal to a minimum. The Warriors looked to play out from the back and the midfield duo of Tessa Goringe and Edward Stephens then carried the ball forward really well, showing great control and some wonderful turns. Caldryn Buckley worked hard upfront, winning possession in good positions, and was unlucky not to break the dead lock.
For the second quarter, Tessa Goringe took the gloves, Alfie Moult moved out to defence, Edward Stephens and Alex Gursel ran the midfield, with Daniel DeLima up top. The quarter started with Mayford applying a little pressure, but the warriors werent tackle shy and did well to them at bay. Mayford won a free kick close to the Warriors area. The ball was played into the area with pace and with one touch, Mayford put it in the net to take the lead. Determined to get back in the game, Daniel Delima and Alex Gursel made some get tackles, stopping mayford from having any time on the ball. Alfie Moult collected the ball and broke away down the left. Cutting inside and crossing, the ball found Edward Stephens who had made a great supporting run. Calmly he tucked the ball into the back of the net and the Warriors were level.
Edward Stephens and Alfie Moult took a rest for the third quarter. Alex Gursel went in goal, Daniel Delima moved back into mid field with Tom Chapman, and Caldryn Buckley lead the attack. The pressure seemed to be in Mayfords half this quarter. Daniel Delima and Tom Chapman played up into the opponents half with Tessa Goringe tidying up anything that might get past them. Caldryn Buckley came close with some well hit strikes, but the Mayford defence could not be breached this quarter.
With another change for the final quarter Tom Chapman went in goal. Edward Stephens in defence, Alfie Moult and Tessa Goringe in the middle with Alex Gursel up front. Again the pressure was more in Mayfords half. Great energy upfront from Alex Gursel gave them little opportunity to escape their half. Alfie Moult and Tessa Goringe controlled the midfield and chances started to come the Warriors way. Edward Stephens kept it tight at the back and dealt with anything that came his way. With 5 minutes left Tessa Goringe and Edward Stephens were replaced with Caldryn Buckley and Daniel Delima. Alfie Moult picked up the ball in an advanced position on the right, and dribbled across the edge of the area to tuck the ball away with his left peg. Daniel Delima and Tom Chapman let nothing through and the Warriors created a couple more chance with both Alex Gursel and Caldryn Buckley coming close to getting a third. The final whistle blew and brought a thoroughly entertaining game to a close.
Congratulations to both teams on giving us a great game to watch. Well done to all the Warriors, i was wonderful to see how involved in the game everyone one of you was. A great team performance!
Well done to Caldryn Buckley on winning Player of the Match. His strong tackling and hard work was very impressive.
